Welcome to Hippo Hideaway – A Luxury Self-catering Lodge
Hippo Hideaway is a luxury self-catering lodge in the heart of St Lucia on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Approximately 250km from Durban, it is close enough to escape to for the weekend, yet far enough away to really feel like you’re on holiday.
Hippo Hideaway sits on the banks of the St Lucia Estuary, in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, declared as such in December 1999. There are no fences around the lodge so you can expect a hippo or two to wander through the grounds at night, stopping only to munch grass outside your window if you’re staying in the lower section of the lodge.
“iSimangaliso must be the only place on the globe where the oldest land mammal (the rhinoceros) and the world’s biggest terrestrial mammal (the elephant) share an ecosystem with the world’s oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world’s biggest marine mammal (the whale).”
